Increasingly used in road racing worldwide. The fully redesigned 2009 version is the fastest road racing wheel ever. The new fully toroidal tubular rim has been refined with years of experience and testing to further reduce the drag by 8-25 grams over the original 808. The new shape yields to a savings on the road of 2-7 watts of power for a pair of wheels at 30mph, not to mention the real-world benefits of added stiffness and improved braking due to a slightly wider rim and angled brake track. The hubs also have been improved for easier adjustability. At 790 grams for the front and 1462grams per pair, the new 808 Tubular is finding a home with more and more triathletes and road racers.
To enhance aerodynamics and performance Zipp employs several advanced technologies. The ABLC™ dimples (Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control) on the new 808 are the third generation with up to 4 time more dimples than before. A Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control (VCLC) uses a vibration-absorbing material sandwiched between layers of rigid carbon laminate in the rim to reduce vibration by up to 10%. Carbon Bridge uses a Kevlar® thread to make the rim much stronger and reduce damage caused by impact.
