04/07/10 - Petacchi wins 1st stage of Tour de France
BRUSSELS, Belgium — Alessandro Petacchi has won the first stage of the Tour de France in a sprint, while Lance Armstrong and other top contenders trailing in the pack in a day marred by several crashes.
The Lampre-Farnese Vini sprinter, who also successfully avoided a dramatic Tour de Suisse crash to win there last month, took his first Tour stage since his record Grand Tour run of 2003.
Petacchi bested HTC-Columbia's Mark Renshaw, who was all that was left of the Cavendish lead-out train in the end, and Cervelo's Thor Hushovd, the Norwegian road champion.
